La pièce de cinq yens, ou « go-en dama », est porteuse d'une signification particulière, celle du destin et du hasard. Au Japon, les Japonais apportent souvent des pièces de cinq yens aux sanctuaires shintoïstes pour nouer de bonnes relations avec les divinités, et il est courant d'en placer une dans un nouveau portefeuille avant d'y ajouter de l'argent. Le charme de la pièce de cinq yens réside dans son nom : « go-EN ». Le chiffre 5 signifie « go » en japonais, et « yen » se prononce « en ». Plus important encore, « go-EN » signifie « succès honorable », notamment dans les relations amoureuses. On jette ces pièces dans les temples dans l'espoir d'attirer de nouvelles relations : chance, amitié ou amour.
